At Recycle North Geelong , we believe in giving materials a second life — and cardboard is no exception. Every day, tonnes of cardboard arrive at our facility, ready to be transformed from waste into a vital resource for the agricultural industry. But what does this process look like? And how does it help local vegetable growers?
Let’s take a look behind the scenes at how we recycle cardboard into reusable materials — and ultimately into new boxes that serve farms across the region.
Step 1: Collection and Sorting
The journey begins when cardboard is collected from businesses, households, and commercial suppliers across the Geelong region. At our depot, each load is inspected and sorted. Clean, dry cardboard is separated from contaminated materials to ensure high recycling quality.
We prioritize source-separated recycling , which reduces contamination and maximizes the value of recovered fibres. This step is critical in preparing the material for reuse in high-grade applications, like agricultural packaging.
Step 2: Processing and Baling
Once sorted, the cardboard is compressed into compact bales using our industrial baler. These bales are tightly packed to maximize shipping efficiency and are stored safely until ready for transport.
Each bale represents thousands of litres of saved landfill space — and countless potential uses.
Step 3: Supply to Box Manufacturers
The baled cardboard is then shipped to Australian cardboard mills and packaging manufacturers, many of which supply directly to the agricultural sector . Here, the recycled fibres are pulped, cleaned, and reprocessed into new cardboard sheets.
These sheets become fresh boxes — often printed with the names of local farms — ready to be filled with fresh vegetables and distributed to markets, grocers, and communities across the country.
A Circular Solution for Local Farms
By recycling cardboard into new agricultural packaging, we’re closing the loop. Instead of single-use waste, cardboard becomes a sustainable packaging solution — one that supports both environmental health and local food supply chains.
Vegetable farmers benefit from access to high-quality, affordable boxes made from recycled content, and our region reduces landfill volumes and carbon emissions.
Why It Matters
This process isn’t just about recycling — it’s about building a circular economy where waste becomes opportunity.
By supporting Recycle North Geelong, businesses and residents are part of a larger mission:
- Reducing waste
- Supporting local industries
- Strengthening sustainable agriculture
Next time you break down a cardboard box, remember: it could be the very same material that helps deliver tomorrow’s fresh vegetables to your table.
